SANTA FE, N.M. — Authorities are investigating the death of Alexia Verdugo Sigala, 24, of Santa Fe, following a shooting that left her critically injured and later claimed her life.
Santa Fe police officers were dispatched at approximately 1:45 p.m. to a residence near the intersection of Rufina Street and Atocha Road after receiving a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Alexia suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso.
Emergency medical personnel transported her to a local hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Alexia succumbed to her injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. According to investigators, an initial investigation indicated that Alexia was struck after her brother unintentionally discharged a rifle. The firearm was recovered and taken into evidence as detectives continued working to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
Investigators also interviewed Alexia’s brother and are working with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges, if any, may be appropriate.
Authorities have stated that there is currently no indication of another suspect at large and that there is no continuing threat to the public.
Alexia was also known within the local school and sports community for her involvement with the Capital High School volleyball program, where she served as the C-team coach. Her role allowed her to work closely with young athletes, providing guidance, encouragement, and support.
News of her death has left members of the volleyball community and those who knew her grieving the loss of a young woman whose life ended unexpectedly at just 24 years old.
As investigators continue examining the incident, Alexia’s family, friends, students, athletes, and loved ones are left to cope with the sudden loss.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
