A large field fire has broken out in Middleton, Norfolk, prompting a significant emergency response as soaring temperatures and drought conditions continue to increase the risk of wildfires across the region.

Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 4:50 p.m. after reports of flames spreading through a field near the village. Thick smoke could be seen rising above the area, with the blaze visible from the Knights Hill area of King’s Lynn.

Emergency services have urged members of the public to avoid the area wherever possible to allow fire crews unrestricted access. Residents nearby have also been asked not to put themselves at risk by approaching the fire or attempting to take photographs or videos.

Earlier in the afternoon, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed that crews had been dispatched to a separate incident in Shernborne at around 4:15 p.m., with firefighters believed to still be working at that location as well.

The fires come during another period of extreme heat across West Norfolk, where temperatures have climbed to around 32°C. Prolonged dry weather has left vegetation highly combustible, increasing the likelihood of grass and field fires spreading rapidly.

A hosepipe ban remains in effect across Norfolk, while the Environment Agency has confirmed that more than half of the United Kingdom, including Norfolk, is officially experiencing drought conditions. Authorities have reported exceptionally low river levels, early harvests, and an elevated wildfire risk throughout the region.

At this stage, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to nearby homes, and the cause of the Middleton field fire has not yet been determined. Fire crews continue working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
