With heavy hearts, we remember Shayna Watson, 38, of Carrboro, whose life was tragically cut short following a homicide in Carrboro on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Her death has left a community facing grief and sorrow as family, friends, neighbors, and others who knew her come to terms with the heartbreaking loss.

According to the Carrboro Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:17 p.m. regarding a disturbance at an apartment on Cedarwood Lane. When officers arrived, they discovered a deceased woman inside the apartment. She was later identified as Shayna Watson.

Police said their investigation led to the identification of Desmond Cook, 42, of Carrboro, as the suspect in the case. Cook has been charged with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. He is being held at the Orange County Detention Center without bond.

While the investigation continues, the loss of Shayna remains at the center of a community grieving a life that ended far too soon. Every person leaves behind memories, moments, relationships, and pieces of themselves that remain with those who loved them. For Shaynaโ€™s family and friends, those memories may now carry both deep pain and lasting comfort.
