HOLLISTER, N.C. — With heavy hearts, family, friends and a community mourn the tragic loss of Joel Lynch, 50, of Hollister, whose life was cut short Sunday night following a shooting at a local convenience store. His passing has left behind grief, unanswered questions and an emptiness that words cannot fully describe.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at approximately 9:31 p.m., when deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded to a convenience store in the 37,000 block of Highway 561 in Hollister following reports of shots fired.

When deputies arrived, they learned that an individual at the scene had been shot. First responders immediately began lifesaving measures in an effort to save the victim. Despite those efforts, Joel succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Joel was 50 years old, and his sudden passing has undoubtedly left a profound void in the lives of the people who knew and loved him. A life that once held ordinary moments, meaningful relationships and future plans was suddenly brought to an end.

According to the preliminary investigation, a large group of ATV riders was at the convenience store when the gunfire occurred. Investigators are now conducting interviews with numerous people who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could help authorities understand what happened.
