HOLLISTER, N.C. — In loving memory of Joel Lynch, 50, of Hollister, whose life was tragically cut short Sunday night after a shooting at a local convenience store.

The heartbreaking incident happened on August 30, 2026, at approximately 9:31 p.m., when deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded to a convenience store in the 37,000 block of Highway 561 in Hollister following reports of shots fired.

When deputies arrived, they learned that an individual at the scene had been shot. First responders immediately began lifesaving measures in an effort to save the victim. Despite those efforts, Joel Lynch succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Joel was 50 years old — a husband, father, family member, friend, neighbor or loved one to those who knew him. His sudden passing has left behind pain that cannot easily be expressed in words.

A normal Sunday evening turned into a devastating moment for Joel’s loved ones. Instead of another day filled with ordinary conversations, familiar smiles and time together, his family is now forced to face the heartbreaking reality of his absence.

Investigators say a large group of ATV riders was at the convenience store when the gunfire occurred. Detectives are conducting interviews with numerous individuals as they work to establish exactly what happened and identify the circumstances surrounding Joel’s death.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the shooting, and the investigation remains active.
