With heavy hearts, we remember 33-year-old Edward Young Jr., a LaBelle-area man whose life came to a tragic end following a deputy-involved shooting along State Road 29 just north of Case Road.

According to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a traffic stop at approximately 5:25 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a reckless driver. Shortly afterward, deputies reported that shots had been fired, resulting in Edward suffering gunshot wounds.

Edward was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts made to save his life, his family later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details about what happened during the traffic stop or what led to the exchange of gunfire. Deputies were not injured in the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and additional information is expected as investigators continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding Edward’s death.

While the investigation focuses on the events that led to the shooting, Edward’s family and loved ones are now facing a much more personal reality — learning how to move forward without someone they loved.

At approximately 11:11 p.m., a vehicle reportedly struck a marked Hendry County Sheriff’s Office patrol car that had been positioned to block traffic at State Road 29 and Case Road. Minor injuries were reported, while the deputy was not injured.

The second incident serves as another reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and motorists in the aftermath of a major emergency.

For Edward’s loved ones, however, the focus remains on the life that was lost.
