With heavy hearts, we remember Christian Santiago, a 20-year-old man whose life came to a tragic end following a police pursuit and shooting near the beginning of the Scranton Expressway in Pennsylvania on Sunday night.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, Scranton police had been investigating a burglary in which Santiago allegedly took a .30-06 rifle from a relativeโs residence. After Santiago reportedly sent a family member a photograph of the rifle and ammunition, his family obtained an involuntary mental health commitment warrant.
Police later attempted to stop Santiago, but authorities said he fled in a black Ford Focus. At approximately 8:37 p.m., state police located the vehicle at the Penn Can Travel Plaza in Susquehanna County. A pursuit followed south on Interstate 81 and continued through several Lackawanna County communities.
The pursuit eventually came to an end near the beginning of the Scranton Expressway, where state police performed a PIT maneuver. During the subsequent felony vehicle stop, police said Santiago displayed a rifle from the driverโs-side window and failed to comply with commands.
Authorities reported that a gunshot was then heard from inside the vehicle. State police subsequently fired multiple rounds into the vehicle.
Santiago was removed from the vehicle by members of the Pennsylvania State Police SERT, Scranton SOG and Lackawanna County SWAT Team. He was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he later died.
State police said investigators are still working to determine the origin of the gunshot that caused Santiagoโs fatal injury. The investigation is being handled by the Troop R Major Case Team, with assistance from Troop R Forensic Services and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist unit.
Christian Santiago was only 20 years old, and his death marks the end of a young life surrounded by circumstances that remain under investigation. For those who knew and cared for him, the loss is undoubtedly difficult to comprehend.
May his loved ones find strength, comfort, and peace as they face this painful loss. May Christian Santiago be remembered with dignity and compassion.
Rest in peace, Christian Santiago. You will not be forgotten.
