The incident began after an automated license plate reader alerted authorities to a vehicle believed to be connected to a homicide investigation in North Carolina. Officers located the vehicle on U.S. Route 50 in Athens County and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. When the vehicle did not stop, a pursuit followed.

After approximately 20 minutes, troopers attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop on State Route 32 using a tire-deflation device. Authorities said the vehicle swerved to avoid the device, struck a road sign, and eventually stopped near Hiram West Road. Troopers then reported hearing two gunshots coming from inside the vehicle.

Carmyn Moore and Corey Armstrong were subsequently found dead. Authorities said no other injuries were reported and that no shots were fired by law enforcement.

Beyond the details of the investigation are two human lives that have now come to an end. Carmyn and Corey were more than names in a police report. They were individuals who had lived 26 and 29 years of life, carrying their own memories, experiences, relationships, hopes, and struggles.
