Today, we remember Alexia Verdugo Sigala, 24, of Santa Fe, whose life was tragically cut short following a gunshot injury on September 5, 2026.
Alexia’s passing has left her family, friends, and everyone who knew her facing a heartbreaking loss. At just 24 years old, she had so much life still ahead of her, so many moments yet to be lived, memories yet to be created, and dreams yet to be fulfilled. Her death is a painful reminder of how suddenly life can change and how deeply the loss of one person can affect an entire family.
According to authorities, Santa Fe Police officers responded at approximately 1:45 p.m. to a residence in the area of Rufina Street and Atocha Road following a report of an accidental shooting. Officers found Alexia suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. She was initially transported by Santa Fe Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital before being airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. Despite efforts to save her, Alexia sadly succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators later determined that the circumstances surrounding her death were more serious than initially reported, and detectives are investigating the case as a homicide. Authorities said Alexia’s adult brother allegedly discharged a rifle unintentionally, striking her. The firearm has been taken into evidence, and investigators are working with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges.
While the investigation continues, the focus now turns to remembering Alexia not simply as the victim of a tragic incident, but as a young woman whose life mattered.
Her family has been notified of her passing, and they are now left to navigate the unimaginable pain of saying goodbye to someone who should have had many more years ahead of her.
May Alexia Verdugo Sigala be remembered with love, dignity, and compassion. May the memories she created with those closest to her provide comfort during the difficult days ahead. And may her family find strength as they grieve a loss that words can never fully express.
Rest peacefully, Alexia. Your life mattered, your memory will endure, and you will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Alexia Verdugo Sigala.
