NORTH READING, MASSACHUSETTS — Samir Nali, 35, and his 8-year-old daughter, Kashmira Nali, were killed in a devastating late-night crash in North Reading after a white Acura MDX allegedly traveling at an extremely high rate of speed struck the Honda HR-V they were traveling in at the intersection of Main Street (Route 28) and North Street. The driver of the Acura, identified as 21-year-old Matthew Sweeney of Paxton, Massachusetts, was taken into custody following the crash and is facing multiple felony charges, including two counts of felony motor vehicle homicide, along with charges related to operating under the influence and reckless driving.

The fatal collision happened shortly before 11:00 p.m. Saturday night, according to information being reported from the scene and radio transmissions at the time. Authorities were alerted after an Andover police officer reportedly observed a white Acura MDX traveling at a very high rate of speed, with some estimates placing the vehicle’s speed at more than 100 mph.

The officer reportedly attempted to stop the Acura and radioed that they were trying to conduct a traffic stop. However, the vehicle continued driving and the officer was unable to bring it to a stop. According to the information available from the initial radio traffic, the officer reportedly decided not to pursue the vehicle.

The Acura continued into neighboring North Reading, where local authorities were being notified about the speeding vehicle.

Moments later, the situation turned into a horrific tragedy.

The Acura reportedly continued traveling at a high rate of speed through North Reading before striking the Honda HR-V from behind near the traffic light at the intersection of Main Street, also known as Route 28, and North Street.

The impact was catastrophic.

The Honda was violently propelled down the roadway following the collision. The vehicle then caught fire, with flames quickly engulfing the wreckage.

Inside the Honda were 35-year-old Samir Nali and his 8-year-old daughter, Kashmira Nali.

Witnesses and responding officers reportedly attempted to reach the father and daughter and get them out of the wreckage. However, the rapidly spreading flames made rescue efforts extremely difficult and dangerous.

Despite those efforts, both victims died at the scene from injuries sustained in the devastating collision and subsequent fire.
