PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. — A 44-year-old Hampton man, Omar DeLoatch, was found dead from an apparent shooting on private property in Prince George County Saturday morning. Authorities have since arrested Del’Wan Bland, 41, of Prince George, and charged him in connection with the fatal incident.

The Prince George County Police Department said officers were dispatched at approximately 10:50 a.m. to the 15200 block of James River Drive after receiving a report of an unresponsive individual on private property.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased man. Investigators determined that he had sustained injuries consistent with ballistic trauma. The victim was later identified as DeLoatch, who was 44 years old and lived in Hampton.

Detectives immediately began working to determine how the shooting occurred and who was responsible. Through their investigation, authorities developed a suspect and identified Bland as a person allegedly connected to the death.

Bland was taken into custody later Saturday without incident. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon.

According to police, Bland remains incarcerated at Riverside Regional Jail without bond as the case moves through the court system.

Additional information has also emerged about activity reportedly observed near the area before DeLoatch was discovered. According to Virginia Statewide Incidents, congressional candidate Justin Goodman said he and his family were working nearby Friday evening when he noticed a vehicle enter the area.

Goodman said that shortly afterward, he heard a single gunshot and observed the vehicle leave the area at a high rate of speed along a dirt road. Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether the vehicle or gunshot described by Goodman was connected to the homicide.

Police have not released a motive or provided further details about what may have led to the shooting. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding DeLoatch’s death and are working to establish a complete timeline of events.
