Today, we pause with heavy hearts to remember Grant Hale, 17, of Minerva, Ohio, whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal crash on U.S. Route 30 in Perry Township, Stark County, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

At approximately 12:19 p.m., a devastating two-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. Route 30 westbound near milepost 11. According to the preliminary investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Grant was traveling eastbound in a 2013 Ford Fusion when his vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway, crossed the grassy median, and entered the westbound lanes. His vehicle then collided with a 2018 Mack truck traveling westbound.

The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway and into a wooded area. Tragically, Grant sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Stark County Coroner’s Office.

At just 17 years old, Grant’s life held so much promise. There were undoubtedly dreams he had yet to pursue, places he had yet to see, milestones he had yet to experience, and memories he had yet to make. His passing leaves behind an emptiness that words can never fully describe.

When someone so young is taken from this world, the pain can feel especially difficult to comprehend. Seventeen years may seem like a short lifetime, but within those years are countless moments that become treasured memories—smiles, conversations, friendships, family gatherings, laughter, and simple everyday moments that become priceless after someone is gone.

Today, those who knew and loved Grant are left holding onto those memories.

They will remember his presence, his personality, his laughter, and the moments that made him special. They will remember the little things that may have once seemed ordinary but now carry extraordinary meaning. Though his time on Earth was tragically brief, the impact of his life will continue through everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

There are no perfect words for a loss like this. No statement can erase the heartbreak or bring back someone who should still be here. But remembrance can keep a person’s spirit alive in the hearts of those who loved them.

As the community mourns Grant’s passing, thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss. Losing someone so young is a pain that can be difficult to put into words, and the days ahead may be filled with grief, questions, and memories.

The crash also left the driver of the Mack truck, Wayne D. Schafrath, 75, of Canton, with minor injuries. He was transported to Aultman Hospital by Perry Township EMS. We also extend thoughts for his recovery as everyone affected by this tragedy begins to cope with what happened.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Several agencies assisted at the scene, including the Perry Township Police Department, Perry Township Fire Department, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Stark County Coroner’s Office, Canton City Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Canton Towing, and Patriot Towing.

But beyond the investigation, beyond the roadway, and beyond the official report is a family and community grieving the loss of a 17-year-old whose story should have continued for many more years.

Grant Hale will not be remembered simply for the circumstances of his passing. He will be remembered for the life he lived.

May his memory remain a source of comfort to those who loved him. May the memories shared by family and friends bring moments of peace through the pain. And may everyone who knew Grant carry something of his memory forward.

Sometimes, a life does not have to be long to leave a lasting impression.

Though Grant’s journey ended far too soon, his memory will continue in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
